hello. im new to the group and just wondered what would be the best way for my family to put up food. I do have some can goods stored (try to get extra every time i go to store), but should i start canning too? What about water storage? We live in the country and have 4 adults and 1 child.

    • If you start canning your own food, you’ll probably get addicted and never regret it. LOL :-) Do you garden? Canning is a great way to put food up from your garden. But I also buy meats etc. and pressure can them.
I would start with the basics first. Buying jugs of spring water, date them so you can rotate though them. Then start buying a few extras of food you like to eat. If you like rice and beans that’s great they store well! The idea is to build a big pantry of what you enjoy and rotate thought it. Date everything and use the oldest cans/bags etc first.

How long of a food storage are you trying to build up? I think I posted some info in the forum on this already. There are sites that help to calculate how much of each item you need per year. I’ll try and find the link.
