71 Degrees here in the San Diego area.  Rain is forecasted for Thursday only, but clear after that!  A Green Christmas is the only type we ever get down here!

Actually… I just checked… my post is there now (the one about ”Fruit Trees I Grow”).  I’m not getting replies to my post, but perhaps I need to check my settings.

Hi Kim… I tried to post last week and got an error.  I had a nice long post all typed out, tried to post and it all disappeared.  I didn’t think to let you know at the time.

I canned a batch of Loquats on Sunday… added zero sugar so we’ll see how I like them in the winter! Next batch I’ll make regular jam because I’ve never tried it… this is the first year my trees have produced enough to eat fresh and can. I doubt they can be dehydrated… they are a very juicy fruit that browns easily. If you look at the…[Read more]

Today I opened up some of my dehydrated figs… still as tasty as they were when I dried them last summer!  I need to eat all these up before the fresh ones are ready!

My box doesn’t say “Knifty Knitter” but I looked it up on the web and it looks like its the same product (the round looms from Boye). The looms didn’t seem to be as challenging as crochet, so I put them down for […]

There was a great deal on Blackberries at my local market (.69 cents a pint) so I made a batch of Banana Blackberry Jam (found a recipe but it came out WAY TOO SWEET), regular Blackberry Jam, and Reduced Sugar Blackberry Jam.

The Banana Blackberry would make a good topping for ice cream (like banana split), but I’m thinking I might try just…[Read more]

Lucky you to find blackberries that cheap!! For a pint yet! I like you’re idea for the no sugar jam. I think I will try that next year.

Oh lucky find on the blackberries!! :) I agree I like to use the low/no sugar pectin with some juice and a wee bit of sugar. It makes a yummy jam that’s not to sweet.

I should have added this to my original post… the book has a website with lists for all of the various climates and tells you what you can grow.  I think you can just look at the list and do your own research for more details if you’re looking to save some money.   http://perennialvegetables.org/ [...]

I just bought the book, “Perennial Vegetables” by Eric Toensmeier which discusses over 100 vegetables that you can grow that will return year after year (depending on your growing climate).   When I first moved to my house 3 years ago, I planted over 50 types of fruit.  I figured I needed to get that [...]

I seem to always forget about the crock pot and how easy it is to use it (especially because I have such a long commute to work).  Two nights ago I was looking in my cupboard and saw about 4 types of dried beans and split peas.  I RARELY make beans but I really like [...]

This week my Pineapple Guavas are starting to ripen. (What’s nice about them is you know when they are ripe because they fall to the ground… you never pick them off the tree, but you have to get to them before the bugs!)   Anyway… I’ve always made different jams with these but as you’ve [...]

Do you know any old sayings that people would use to remember things about how to grow certain foods?  Old Farmer’s sayings/tips?   When I was in 8th grade, my family took the Amtrak train from California all the way to New York.  We stopped along the way to see certain towns and cities, but [...]

Yummy! You can always toss the tomatoes into freezer bags to. Then when ready to use run them under hot water, the skins will come off. Then thaw and cook. :-)

I have two different Mulberry trees… A Persian and a Pakistani. The PERSIAN is BY FAR the MOST DELICIOUS!!! The berries themselves taste like Vanilla Ice Cream with Berries (without the Ice Cream)!!! The berries are large, plump and very juicy.
