Lovely day resting in the Lord and enjoying family….

Hello Dear Friends,

I pray each of you are having a lovely day! We are enjoying water polo, archery, fencing, soccer(football) and gymnastics!! The list is endless!! The London Olympics!! So much fun!! We even booked a hotel room in a large city nearby. We live in the country and do not have cable. So my sweet hubby and son are in hog heaven!! Even my girls are having fun!!

How amazing to see all the wonderful athletes from all over the world!! Their individual expertise of each sport is truly amazing!! We loved the opening and all the beauty of the different people the Lord created!! We are created in His image and are His workmanship!!

I watch and remember early days as a young girl and all the sports I participated in. I was on every team…even played soccer with the boys athletics!! (If you saw me today…I am such a girlie girl!!) ;) These days….I am good to get my walk in and if really good my recumbant bike!! ;) The good ole’ days.

Nowadays….we were trying to decide what cheesecake to eat with our strawberries while watching the games!! HA!!

What a blessing the Lord gives us even in watching these many nations to come together. Wouldn’t it be nice if this practice of goodwill could be kept throughtout all days. I imagine that is a glimpse of heaven. I can only think what it will be to see Jesus and all His children!! What a blessing to sit and chat with people from all varieties of walks, cultures and interests without war or threat of war!! OK, a bit heavy when discussing the excitement of the Olympics.

So enjoy your day resting in the Lord, loving your sweet family and if you get a chance….root on your favorite athletes!! At least it motivates me to walk and move about. As I came back up with the chocolate cheesecake from the lobby…..I danced and moved about in the elevator (by myself…praying there isn’t a security camera in the elevator!!). :) At least a proactive activity in light of the cheesecake I was going to eat….with my healthy strawberries!!! ;)

Have a wonderful day in the Lord,

k

Sadness as I watch the news today…

What a truly sad time for the families that are involved in this horrible shooting in CO. The initial court process is taking place as I write. I have the tv on. How sad that one individual could be so deadly for so many.

It is a time of prayer and contemplation for our nation. What can we do to change this seemingly ongoing behavior in our nation…in our world?

May this young man understand the full atrocity of his actions. May Jesus have mercy on his soul who chose such actions on innocent people. And may the great Comforter be there to help these families that have been so affected. And finally may the Lord heal the wounded both physically but also emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Truly heart breaking.

May Jesus reign and heal our lands,

k

20 Fun Things To Do During a Homeschooling Summer

20 Fun Things To Do During a Homeschooling Summer

Posted by Rebecca Capuano on July 11th, 2012

Summer Fun for Kids: Freezer PopsWhether you school year ‘round or take a break during the summer months, June, July, and August are the ideal time to jazz up your homeschooling with a bit of extra fun. Warm weather, sunshine, and summer breaks from regular-year activities all make the middle of the year perfect for a little excitement! Camps and swimming are pretty par-for-the-course for many families, but there are just so many things that homeschoolers can do to get the most out of summer and make some wonderful memories. Here are 20 fun ideas to get you started:

  1. Create your own slip-n-slide. Honestly, there is just little that is more fun for kids in the heat than a slip-n-slide! Get a large piece of plastic or tarp, put it on the side of a hill, add a hose, and you’re good to go! For instructions on how to construct an especially hard-core fun slip-n-slide, check out DigitalMisery.com.
  2. Attend a free woodworking workshop. Major home improvement stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot offer free kids’ woodworking clinics, where kids can build everything from organizers to race cars.  Go to Lowe’s Build and Grow or homedepot.com for information on upcoming workshops.
  3. Make your own freezer pops. Who wants store-bought freezer pops when you can make your own? Freezer pops are a staple of summer, and a great way for kids to get some beginning culinary skills! For 176 great freezer pops recipes, visit Laura’s Best Recipes.
  4. Participate in your local library’s summer programs. Most local libraries offer a variety of summer activities and reading programs. These can be everything from magician shows to sewing clinics to reading for pizza coupons. Ask at your local library branch for details on upcoming summer activities.
  5. See a movie for less. Many theatres, such as Regal Entertainment Group and Carmike Cinemas, offer summer movie programs for kids where admission can be as little as $1 on the particular days of the program. These programs are a fabulous way to beat the heat for less and be entertained at the same time!
  6. Create a lemonade stand. A lemonade stand is a great way to teach kids entrepreneurship while keeping neighbors cool during the heat of the summer months! Have kids design a lemonade stand, make the lemonade, and conduct the business transactions themselves. Let them use their profits to purchase something of their choice.
  7. Visit a local arboretum or botanical garden. Kids can learn so much about local plants and flowers and gain an appreciation for nature by visiting these oft-neglected resources. To find local gardens, visit bhg.org or Lawn & Garden Search.
  8. Make homemade ice cream. There is just something perfectly summery about homemade ice cream with which store-bought ice cream can’t compete. It’s worth the investment in an ice cream maker for kids to have the experience of making their own creamy treat! For some simple and traditional ice cream recipes, check out ice-cream-recipes.com, or for some more high-fallutin’ options, visit My Recipes, Taste of Home, or Southern Living.
  9. Go bowling for free. A number of bowling centers partner with schools to provide 2 free games of bowling for children each day throughout the summer. Visit kidsbowlfree.com for more information and to find the location of participating bowling centers in your area.
  10. Create an outdoor art studio. I know, I know, the thought of painting projects sends seizures of fear through many a homeschooling mom. So why not create an art studio outdoors? An old bedsheet and some homemade paint in spray bottles can create loads of fun with minimal mess! Check out Family Fun for more information.
  11. Take the kids to VBS. Summertime is the time for Vacation Bible School! Many local churches host VBS during the summer months, with a combination of recreation activities, crafts, singing, and Bible stories. VBS is a great way for kids to get a camp-type experience for free, without actually spending the night anywhere.
  12. Go on a free field trip. There are just so many wonderful free things to do in your own community! Visit free-attractions.com, put in your home state, and check out all of the no-cost options at your fingertips! Summertime is the perfect time to take a field trip right where you live, on the cheap!
  13. Catch lightning bugs. Are they lightning bugs or fireflies? Whatever you call them, this time-honored tradition is a “must” for every child. Grab a mason jar, poke some air holes in the lid, and let kids go out at dusk to see how many they can catch! Once you’ve caught them (or even before you do), bring the kids inside and check out firefly.com for information on the bugs, or investigate How Stuff Works to find out how they light up.
  14. Pick your own summer produce. Strawberries, blueberries, peaches, apples, squash, tomatoes…just a few of the things your family can pick yourselves! Teach children where food comes from while bringing home your own fresh produce. Check out Pick Your Own to find a list of farms and orchards in your area where you can pick local produce. The site also lists farmer’s markets, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, Christmas tree farms, and local fruit and vegetable festivals.
  15. Create some fun shapes with watermelon.  This staple of summer is so much more fun when it is carved into fun shapes! Who doesn’t want to eat fruit from a shark-shaped watermelon?! Older kids will love the challenge of making the fruit into an art project. Check out watermelon.org for lots of creative carving ideas, and have fun eating your fruit!
  16. Attend a festival. Summertime is a great time for local festivals in many localities. Visit festivals.com for a list of upcoming festival events in your area.
  17. Build a special hideaway or fort. Kids love to create their own forts – whether in the woods or the backyard, this great summertime pasttime encourages physical activity, creativity, and ingenuity. Check out Chocolate Cake Moments for lots of great ideas on fort-building for kids!
  18. Camp in your backyard. Set up a tent for the family in the yard, cook out on the grill, and make camping easy and fun! For some extra excitement, check out this video on how to make shadow puppets on the tent at About.com. Read books by flashlight and tell some ghost stories: Visit American Folklore for some campfire story inspiration!
  19. Attend a craft clinic. Craft stores such as Michael’s, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, AC Moore, and Hobby Lobby offer a variety of crafting workshops and tutorials for kids. From duct-tape wallets to bracelets, these “make-and-take” activities inspire creativity while leaving the mess somewhere other than your home! Click on each individual store link for a list of upcoming kids’ events at craft stores in your area.
  20. Check out some yard sales. Teach kids how to find great deals by hitting the local summer yard and garage sales! Give kids a small amount of money for them to purchase a few treasures of their own, and show the kids how to transform the “great finds” into useful items for the home.

Rain, rain….don’t go away!!

Hello Dear Friends,

I have been thinking about the need for rain. Our US in some areas is suffering from horrible drought. Our poor farming communities. An old friend of mine’s family were all farmers. Her Dad was the pastor of their church. I used to love to go and hear the prayers of this church!! They lived 3-4 hours away so a visit always included Sunday church. The prayers were about the soil, work and weather. How the simple things in life meant so very much!! Now that we live in farm fields and ranch land…..and our own small orchards and gardens we see weather as instrumental.

The last week has been such a blessing!! We have had rain!! We had a couple of good rains and then thunderstorms with light rains. Now we definitely could use more rain….but I am so thankful for what we have received!! And as I write it is cloudy and gray. Most of the time gray skies indicate a sadness of such. But all those gray skies have lowered our hot Summer temperatures. I was just looking at our forecast and as the gray skies leave the temps will rise.

We have beautiful gardens that are recouping from the beginning of the Summer’s extreme heat and drought. And though our well is still limping we are so thankful we have been able to give it a rest from needing to water. So as the sun shines more….we will be back to typical Summer heat and drought soon. It has been a wonderful blessing from the Lord!! And we will continue to pray for more rain and these lower temps. :) The Lord’s will be done!!

k

PS- The Lord heard our prayers!! My youngest daughter just came in as the thunder boomed to say it was raining….pouring!! PTL!!! So more harvesting in the garden will have to wait. Wow….better get off hudge lightening and thunder!! Have a great day in the Lord!!

Hello New Friends,

Hello Dear New Friends,

I was reading some wonderful blogs and found this great blogging community!! I instantly joined!! WOW, you all look incredible!! I look so forward to getting to know you all and learning all your wonderful information!!

We live on a small homestead inbetween a large farm and ranch. So though we are small we feel big!! My sweet hubby works in the city and farms by night/weekends. We hold down the fort while he is in the city!! We have large gardens, orchards, grapes/berry patch and poultry galore!! We have raised goats, rabbits and bred dogs. We now have limited critters as the children are growing up and we needed to slow down a bit. I do have my little parrotlet and the children have their english budgie. And we have multiple fish tanks inside as well. So life is still fun!!

I LOVE all the homemaking, homesteading and crafting information I have seen so far!! I can’t wait to begin reading!! I used to own a Weaving, Spinning and Sewing store. We also had a web business sewing modest clothing and miniature replica dresses. So much fun!!! Times have changed and as the family has grown up we are changing gears.

I also have a blog at http://homeschoolblogger.com/healthandliving4him. Come by and read for a while. Before that it was http://homesteadblogger.com/healthyliving4him (I left this one up as I just recently moved to the new group). We do have a website still of our current edeavors at HealthyLiving4Him@webs.com.

That is a little information about us!! Looking forward to meeting you all!!

Have a great day in the Lord, k
