I thought it would be fun if we had a forum thread to share what we are doing in the garden. Smile

Yesterday we put down rolls of landscape fabric for our tomatoes.  I’ve planted out all the tomatoes except one flat.  I hope to get that in today.  Most of the rows have been covered with a white floating row cover.  These make great frost protection and also act like a mini greenhouse.  I also soaked and planted our sweet corn and green beans.

Today I’ve watered the corn, strawberries and brought my remaining seedlings out to enjoy the hot day we are having!  We need to get more landscape fabric then I can finish putting in the tomatoes and peppers.  I hope to get the beets and carrots into day as well.

So what are you all up to?

    BeforeAfter

We finally got the new manure in the food garden yesterday. We have a raccoon (I think, the boys used their animal prints book) tearing up our yard right now. I’m glad I hadn’t but one pumpkin in so far. We set the trap and the food was gone this am, trap empty. arg!

We are planting beets, cucumbers, lettuce, cabbage, pumpkin, peas and tomatoes. I’m going to put potatoes in the raised bed.

Meanwhile, we put in a planter the boys are made in the front yard and loaded it with plants. There are foxglove, african daisies, lavender and some other little plants. I only put annuals in the very front so I can change the look every year.  I post pictures of the food garden soon! We plant rather late in Colorado.

The planter looks great!  Those raccoons are clever little buggers.  We have one that likes to dig things up around here too.  We’ve had a trapped set out for it too.  Checked it the other day and it was sprung… but no coon!!!  rrrr!

The weather has been nice the last few days so I finally started getting things in the ground.  Hoping to get everything in that I need to right now before the rain comes.  If the weatherman is correct, for a change, we are suppose to get rain tomorrow and Sunday.

I have planted  corn, buttercup and acorn squash, zucchini, peas, carrots, kohlarabi, potatoes, pumpkin, cabbage and broccoli.  Waiting to put the tomatoes and peppers in yet though.

Last night we had a cold front come through.  It brought really strong winds and rain.  When I got up this morning two of the rows of tomatoes had lost their frost covers.  So I had to go out and put them back on.  Then I added heavy bricks to hold it down better.  It’s going down to 2C tonight, so everything has to be covered up well!

Thanks ladies! Yes, our trap was sprung too. Tonight the boys wrapped the food. I’ll let you know tomorrow if we got it!

Today I finished planting all of my onion plants.  The broccoli is in.  Last week I did the potatoes, some beets and our new strawberry bed.  Many of the strawberries have green leaves starting.  I saw some potato leaves popping up too!

We’ve been working in the gardens most of the weekend.  But boy it’s been hot, about 30C over the weekend.  Thankfully it’s cooled off a little bit.  I’ve finished planting the tomatoes, peppers, egg plants and cape goose berries.  My Wisconsin pickling cucumbers and streight eights.  Oh and my bush beans are starting to come up!

The kids and I also planted their giant max pumpkins and their cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce.  I’m hoping to finish their garden tomorrow.

Most of the potatoes are in as well.  We left one row for the purple and all red ones.

I spent 2 1/2 hours today pulling potato beetles and their eggs off of the potato plants.  They are ready for hilling which is Monday’s job.  Started planting some sweet corn but got rained out.  That’s a good problem.  I have 2/3′s of the peppers in the garden and only 1/2 of the tomatoes.  Next week is suppose to be cooler so it’s planting the squashes, cucumbers, more beans and finish the corn, peppers, and tomatoes.  Then I’ll have to weed!  But that’s ok!  Why do we do this?    At least I know what I”m eating.

We had thunderstorms pass by us last night.  Just close enough to see the lightning and hear the thunder, but not much rain here.  I heard one down pour that lasted maybe 2 minutes.  So I was out watering again this morning.  I water half the gardens in the evening and half in the mornings.  Then I fertilized the sweet corn.  Tonight I hope to do the other plants.  But we need rain SO bad!

Working on weeding and weeding.  Also in my spare time I pick potato beetles and egg larvae.  Hilled the potatoes once this week.  Next week I’ll hill them again then mulch.

I noticed something eating the grape leaves this year.  It’s called the worm of the Grape Flea beetle.  The Grape Flea beetle comes around when the grape vine has buds swelling.  This is the early leaf stage.  They chew on the buds and lay their eggs.  Then as the buds break open the eggs hatch and lots of tiny worms eat the leaves so they look like lace.  OF course, this year is bad for them because of our warmer winter!  Between ticks, fleas and other bugs this year that’s a whole job to keep those at bay!!

I am also planting beans, zucchini and squash.   Trying to get more and more in.

Bonide has a product that works for potato bugs and beetles.  Saw it today when I was at Stein’s.  It is Captain Jack’s Deadbug Brew.  For organic gardening.  Also the EcoSmart organic pesticide that you can get at Walmart is good for plant eating beetles too.  This is what I sprayed the potato plants with last year, and I only got a handful of potato bugs.
