I’ve been busy, like many of you, starting seedlings to plant in the garden.  The other day I began transplanting of the seedlings that have gotten too big for their small pots.  I had a number of 3 and 4 inch plastic pots left from last year, and got creative by cutting the bottoms off of soda bottles and drilling holes in them for drainage, but kept thinking that it would be much nicer if the pots were bio degradable.  I’ve seen people make newspaper pots but I don’t have the tool that they use to make them.  I came across this video tonight and thought I would share it with you.

Very good idea and affordable!  Thanks for sharing.  If I should have all my seeds keep growing I should have around 200 tomato seedlings.  But I just have to try those new varieties!!!

Great vid!  I’ve made newspaper pots and they are so easy.  I use a pint size canning jar to roll the paper around.  I also make mine thicker then one layer of newspaper, I found they held up better.

Take 1 sheet of newspaper and fold it into 3rds, length wise.  Then take that narrow strip and roll it around the jar (or can), fold the bottom in then press flat.  Works great!!

I thought I would make some using 15 1/2 ounce and the 28 ounce cans.  I also cut the bottoms off of soda bottles like the 20 ounce, 1 and 2 liter bottles.  Drill some holes in the bottom and you have pots that can be used year after year.  The tops can be used to put over seedlings as greenhouse covers, and if you put them around your tomatoes early enough before the stems and leaves get too big.. you can sink them into the ground when you plant the tomato and provide a barrier against cutworms.
