I’ll be making a trip to a garden center soon.  I haven’t decided exactly what I would like to get, but I’m leaning towards some fruit bushes.  Maybe black currents…

What are your favourite fruit bushes?

Hanson cherries are good.  Raspberries are out of this world.  I had currents years ago and they made a beautiful flavorful jelly.  My grandma also made currents into sauce and put that over biscuits.   The jury is still out on blueberries.  They are sure slow!  This is year 3 and only a few berries.   Grapes are great too!  Flavorful juice!

Raspberries I can get free from a friend.  :)   I started her with plants years ago now she has a huge patch.  I need to get some starts from her to put in a new patch here.  I have 3 gooseberry bushes that are starting to produce.  I tried grapes but they didn’t make the winter.  I might try them again though.  I love blueberries to!  I’ll have to see what begs to jump into my cart. lol

We tried to grow raspberries, they died.  ARG… It is so incredibly hard to grow things here. We planted an apple tree and it’s got curly leaf right now. I just started regular kelp feedings so maybe it will turn around. I agree with Kim, LOVE blueberries!! I wish we could grow them, but I doubt they would survive!

Theresa is it your winters that are to hard for the berry plants?  Or is it the dry summers?  I’m wondering if a deep mulch might help with both problems.  In the summer it would help cool the soil and keep the moisture in.  Then in the winter it would help protect the roots.

I know I read that Colorado is very hard for raspberries and that only 2 types are good for the state.  What type did you have?  I can ask my sister what kind they have… she is in Colorado too.

Hi Ladies, I just now saw these responses, I didn’t get an email, sorry!

I’ve never gotten raspberries to grow well, so not sure if the winter would kill them. I’m not sure what kind they were:)  So the mulch, maybe…I’m wondering if the mulch is what brought on the black bugs. The pumpkins are thriving with the mulch, the cabbage well…croak…  I did plant red cabbage too but none has come up yet, maybe I’ll take off light layer of mulch.

Our trip was delayed for a week, so my friend, oldest dd and I went yesterday.  :)   I picked 3 currant bushes.  A white one, red and black.  I couldn’t decide so one of each! LOL  I didn’t know that white currants existed!

We had a lot of rain last night, and might get more today so some time this week we’ll get everything planted.

Dd also picked out a few flowers and seeds.
