Today I finished planting all of my onion plants. The broccoli is in. Last week I did the potatoes, some beets and our new strawberry bed. Many of the strawberries have green leaves starting. I saw some potato […]

Mine don’t’ get very big either. Not as big as the onion plants! I use a lot of the bulbs for eating onions. I am trying one of those red fiat kinds and a Pontiac onion. Then I have copra and […]

I started mine from seed this year to.
The onion sets I normally buy up here don’t get very big. I think they are the wrong type since I’ve been reading about onions for different day light lengths. I’m […] -

I started all my onions from seed this year. I bought some plants from the Amish greenhouse. I take the small ones and save them for bulbs for next year. I try to use all the big ones up. This is the first […]

Last night we had a cold front come through. It brought really strong winds and rain. When I got up this morning two of the rows of tomatoes had lost their frost covers. So I had to go out and put them back […]

The planter looks great! Those raccoons are clever little buggers. We have one that likes to dig things up around here too. We’ve had a trapped set out for it too. Checked it the other day and it was […]

We finally got the new manure in the food garden yesterday. We have a raccoon (I think, the boys used their animal prints book) tearing up our yard right now. I’m glad I hadn’t but one pumpkin in so […]

There were two semi dwarf apple trees on this property when we bought it 8 years ago. They do produce well most years but badly need to be pruned. We are hoping to get to that this year! I don’t know what […]

Kim, Wendy & Columbine53 -
Thank all of you so very much for the info. I will be definately looking at the links & info you have posted.
When I am out on the land and in the yard I see all these plants and think that it is “free” food to be harvested or has some medicinal properties even if it is considered a weed to most. My concern is that…[Read more]

You could also check with your local University Extension office or botanical society. I know ours offer different classes on native foliage. Your local community college or University probably offers horticulture classes too. Another resource could be contacting a native american office if you have one near you. They may have information you…[Read more]

Oops – not to confuse anyone – I am not just looking for ”clover” but for ALL kinds of ”weeds” per say that are edible and non-edible.
-
On http://www.backwoodshome.com/blogs/JackieClay/ Jackie Clay had made mention of some weeds in her garden that were edible last year on her blog. You can also write in and ask her a good resource to find out what is edible.

this might help.

or this…

Another thing to research would be herbal books! Many of the ”weeds” are considered herbs and these books will tell you what ones are toxic and safe. Also what parts of the plant are toxic. I think I have some online herb sites bookmarked. I’ll look when I’m done lessons with the kids.

The question I have is not about growing food but rather about “foraging”. As I am walking out on the land and in our yard I see all kinds of what most would call “weeds” and wonder if they are edible.
The question – does anyone know of a good website, etc… that very clearly shows (has color pictures and so forth) of what is edible and…[Read more]

I thought I would make some using 15 1/2 ounce and the 28 ounce cans. I also cut the bottoms off of soda bottles like the 20 ounce, 1 and 2 liter bottles. Drill some holes in the bottom and you have pots that […]

Great vid! I’ve made newspaper pots and they are so easy. I use a pint size canning jar to roll the paper around. I also make mine thicker then one layer of newspaper, I found they held up better.
Take 1 […]

Very good idea and affordable! Thanks for sharing. If I should have all my seeds keep growing I should have around 200 tomato seedlings. But I just have to try those new varieties!!!

I’ve transplanted my onion seedlings, broccoli, purple cauliflower and cabbage. We put them in on Thurs before the rain started. I have more to plant to but the ground is soaked from the heavy rains.
