I loved this post! I remember when everyone here was sending hay out west. Now farmers here need it so bad! We heard from another farmer that last year they were getting 4 to 5 cents a pound, this year it’s 15 cents.

It’s about time! Now if they will make the dairy and egg board in Ontario optional that will be great. It’s sick that small farmers can’t sell their eggs or milk without paying an insane amount of money!

Hi Kim…was watching your video on making Zucchini relish…and then read the comments. People were saying not to use flour or cornstarch…what else could I use? Or can I just leave it out and use nothing?
-
If you are canning this you can substitute the Cooking Clear Jel (not the instant). The equivalent is just slightly less than double the called for amount of cornstarch. You can get it an amish food store. You may also be able to get it at a bakery. Otherwise it can be ordered online. King Arthur has it.. or on Amazon. I could also send some to you.
-
What happens if you use instant clear jell?
-
instant is for making things like pudding. It doesn’t hold up in canning. The Mennonite store by you has both. I got it there last year.

Sorry I missed this, I’ve been out in the garden!
The reasons for leaving it out are that the USDA say’s it can lower the PH and that corn starch can break down during canning and turn runny. So they recommend using clear jell instead. It’s a modified corn starch for canning. But the way I see it, it doesn’t affect the PH any different…[Read more]

Hubby and I are growing indian corn for fall decorating. It seems small in comparison to the sweet corn. Is this usual? also any tips to keep critters off the corn when it starts to produce ears?

Instead of using the tool Johnny’s sells, many just use a simple eye dropper and put 5 drops on the corn ear where the silk emerge from the ear.
-
A few drops of veggie oil will keep the ear worms out. I keep some in a spray bottle and spray it on the ends.
I’m not sure on the size of the ears, but it’s very early in the season depending on where you live? They might have a lot of growing time left. What type are you growing?

what an cool damp day here in ohio. It feels more like October. My garden is growing the tomatoes have tons of blooms. we are trying the florida weave way to tie them up. I think we are doing it right.lol God Bless to all.
-
It has been in the 60s here the last few days. I had to get out a sweatshirt. Brr!
-
It’s very cool here now to! But we are finally getting the much needed rain. Florida weave is our favorite way to do tomatoes. I’ll need to get ours done in the next week or so.
-
How tall do your tomatoes need to be for the first weave?
-
If I remember right, you start the first weave at 1 foot and then every foot after that.

Thanks for sharing this Wendy! I’ve seen similar ones for sale, I think Lehmans has them but they are quite expensive. It looks like they can be easily made! Maybe a project for this summer…

This video is from Missy and Wildman. I don’t agree with everything they post but I do like many of their videos. This particular one is about grinding your own corn and making corn meal mush.

what about some kind of trade type of thing? that way no money is exchanging hands. Although it would have to be done on a small scale. I do agree it is sad with the way things are.
