Wow the weather has really been changing this week!  Sunday it was soooo nice!  It warmed up to about 2C and the kids had a wonderful time playing at the park.  But it was not to last.  By noon on Monday we were under a flash freeze warning.  The wind was so strong you could almost feel the house shaking with the wind gusts.  And drop the temperatures sure did.  It was about -14C last night.  Burr what a change.  But if they are right it will start warming back up tomorrow.  Just about all week they are calling for above 0 temps and freezing rain/rain.  I wonder if we will really have a early spring again this year…

What is it like in your area?

As for signs of an early spring here, our potatoes have been starting to sprout in the cellar.  Also our cats started shedding their winter coats about 3 weeks ago.  Maybe they know something we don’t?

Not to much else going on here right now.  I’m finally over that nasty virus that seemed to drag on all fall and winter. Just a bit of a cold left.  My back is doing much better now to.  I put it out 3 or 4 weeks ago and it’s been on and off with back pain since then.  But the last few days have been pretty good.  I think I’m out of the woods with that. Whoohoo!

Right now I’m working on getting caught up on so many things.  I’m sorting and purging and starting early spring cleaning. What’s happening on your homestead?

Spring has come early to the homestead.  This past winter seemed longer then normal…It was actually quite mild.  But after the cold summer and cold wet fall we had last year, we are very ready for spring!

Saturday we spent some time getting the yard cleaned up.  There is a raised bed in the front yard that had a yew tree planted by the last owners.  I’ve never liked it much.  I also don’t like having toxic plants around kids or pets.   The tree had also sprolled out and taken over the garden bed.  So it was time to get it out.  Dh fired up his chain saw and got it out of there.  Now I need to decide what to replace it with.  I’m thinking about a mock orange shrub I love the smell of them.

I also dug up all the garlic from the garden.  Last year it rained so much in the fall the garlic bulbs were very soft and mucky.  The would have rotted if we harvested them.  So we decided to let them over winter in the gardens.  They did very nicely to.  With the nice weather, they had grown up 3 to 4 inches.  I dug them up and carefully pulled each clove apart, each had a nice set of roots growing already.   The day was getting on so tucked them into buckets and into the greenhouse.

Making rows for the garlic.

Sunday we had a lot of rain so we had to wait until mid Monday to till the garden.  Luckily the ground had been very dry so the rain didn’t turn the soil to muck.  By the time we were finished planting we had done 17 rows, 35 feet long each.  There is still a few handfuls of cloves left over.  I’ll tuck them into the garden here and there.  Maybe in the flower gardens as well.

In the next day or two I hope to get the onion sets in.  Then start the seedlings in the greenhouse.

Last week the nice weather came early.  Temperature climbed up to the low teens!  The day was just to nice to be inside so we headed to the park for a nature walk.

While we were there we found trees that a porcupine had been chewing.   Some deer tracks and one I think is a raccoon track?

Raccoon Track?

Last week a local paper had a funny story on the cover.  The groundhog had predicted 6 more weeks of winter.  But the robins don’t agree!  A robin was spotted in a town in the area.  This on the coldest day of the year to! LOL  Now this could mean nothing at all, but I’ve never seen a robin back home before April!

So is this a confused little bird?  Maybe all the cold weather in the south has him mixed up.

Although, I checked the long range weather…guess what?  Yup they show it warming to near 0C next week.  For this little birds sake I hope it is an early spring.  After last years cold, cold summer I’m also anxious to get back to my gardens!
