This has always been one of my favorite crochet hat patterns. It’s a unisex pattern and works up to give a ribbed pattern. My favorite yarn lately for these hats is Bernat Roving. It’s a bulky yarn that’s 80% acrylic and 20% wool, it does need hand washing but works up quickly and stays soft. However any bulky yarn will work well for this hat.

Crochet Ribbed Hat

Size: One size fits most teen to adult

Gauge: 3 SC per inch

Yarn type: Bulky

Hook: 6mm or J

Chain 35 stitches.

Row 1. SC into the second chain from the hook and in each chain stitch until the end of the row. Chain 1, turn.

Row 2. SC into the bl of each stitch across the row. Chain 1, turn.

Rows 3 to 38. Repeat row 2.

Fold hat in half matching up first and last rows. Slip stitch the seam together, fasten off yarn after last stitch.

Leaving a long tail weave a running stitch around the top edge of the hat, pull to gather. Knot yarn. If there is a small opening at the top sew closed with remaining tail yarn, knot off and weave the end in.

I originally posted this little crochet snowman in a Christmas post a few years ago.  But as I was making a few of these up the other day, I thought I would give him his own post and do a video to!

Gauge really isn’t important with this, but I was using worsted weight yarn and an H hook.  A note on the snowman’s hat, normally when you single crochet you chain 1.  In this pattern I chained 2, because I wanted the hat to be a “little” lopsided.  I wanted the effect of a snowman just made by children.  You know what I mean right?  By the time the hat gets on the top, it’s been much loved. lol  If you want a smooth and neat edge on your hat, then chain 1 instead!

Chain 4, join with a slip stitch.

1st Row work 10 dc in the center of ring.  Join to the first one with a sl.  Chain 3 turn.

2nd Row *Work 2 dc in first stitch, work 1 dc in next stitch. *  Repeat ** all the way around, join with sl.

Repeat row 2 until desired size is reached.  In my example I stopped after row 2.

Weave ends in.

Hat

Row 1 Chain 16, slip stitch back through all chains.  At the end slip stich backwards 4 stitches. Chain 2

Row 2 *Sc in 8 stitches.  Chain 2 turn.*

Repeat ** until hat is desired height.  Cut yarn, weave in ends and sew to snowman face.

I used google eyes and sequins for the mouth and nose.  However I think mini pompoms would be very cute to!

To make the double crochet stitch, wrap the yarn around your hook.  Skip the first 3 chains, remembering that the loop ON the hook does not count as a stitch.  Insert the hook in the center of the 4th chain stitch.  Wrap the yarn and pull it back through the chain stitch.  You now have 3 loops on your hook.

Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the first 2 loops.  Then wrap the yarn once more and pull it through the remaining 2 loops.  Continue working down the chain, working every chain stitch.

When you reach the end, chain 3 and turn your work.  Wrap the yarn around your hook, insert your hook in the next stitch under both of the top loops.   Wrap the yarn around the hook again, pull through the stitch.  You now have 3 loops on the hook.  Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the first 2 loops.  Then wrap the yarn once more and pull it through the remaining 2 loops.  Continue working the pattern until your piece is the desired length.

To form the single crochet stitch, insert your hook through the center of the second chain from the hook.  Remember the loop ON the hook does not count as a stitch.  Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it back through the chain.  Wrap the yarn around again and pull it through all the loops on the hook.

When you have reached the end of your first row, chain 1 and turn your work.  Insert your hook under both loops of the first stitch, wrap the yarn and pull through the stitch.  Wrap the yarn again and pull through all the remaining loops.  Continue working this way until your piece is as long as you like.

To start your crochet chain, start with a slip knot around the hook.  Wrap the yarn around the hook once and pull it back through the slip knot.  That new loop is your first chain, the slip knot does not count as a stitch!  Continue wrapping the yarn once and pulling through the loop on the hook until your chain is the length you need.

The weather has been pretty chilly here on the homestead!  We woke up to 6 inches of snow a few days ago.  The weatherman kept insisting that it would melt, but so far nope.  Maybe he’s afraid to tell everyone winter is hear to stay? lol

The past few weeks I’ve been making crochet hats for our girls.  I had planned to do this for Christmas!  But they all wanted new hats now. :-)  So I’ll have to make up a few more to tuck under the tree for them later.

It’s not in this photo, but I also made a little pink one for dd4.  I’m thinking about doing red and white stripes for their Christmas hats!

Child's crochet hat

With the cold weather here, all the little ones have requested new hats!  So I’ve been whipping up some of my quick and easy kids crochet hats.   This pattern fits my 9 and 7 year old great, and even my 5 year old can wear it with the brim rolled up a bit more.  By crocheting in the back loops of each stitch, it makes a simple but pretty pattern.

For a custom fit measure your child’s head and make your crochet chain 2 inches shorter.  For a younger child reduce height from 12 inches to 8 inches.

Stitch notes:  DC = double crochet, BLO = back loops only

Easy Child’s Crochet Hat

Bulky weight yarn

Size 6 mm crochet hook

Gauge 3 dc’s per inch

Chain 44

Row 1. DC in the 3rd chain from the hook and in each chain across.  After the last stitch chain 3, turn.

Row 2. DC in the BLO in each stitch across.  After last stitch chain 3, turn.

Repeat row 2, until hat is 11 to 12 inches high.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail, draw it through the loop to secure.  Fold the hat over, lining up the pattern and sew the seam together.  I use a blanket stitch, but a whip stitch works well to.

Weave the remaining yarn through the top edge and pull to gather together.  Sew a knot to secure and weave the yarn ends in.  Turn right side out and roll up the brim to the desired height.

A very pregnant me 4ish years ago! I wanted a shawl that would keep me and baby warm.

Years ago I was wanting a nice thick, warm shawl for winter.  I also wanted it to be simple and quick to make.  I came up with a triangle shawl using just the single crochet and double crochet stitches.  Using a thick yarn this works up so nice and cuddly.

I used to sell this pattern in my shop a few years ago, but I’ve decided to turn it into a freebie pattern.  I hope you enjoy!

The Cozy Country Shawl

Hook size: N – 9 mm

Yarn: Bernat Soft Boucle or other soft and thick yarn.

Note:  If you would like a more open shawl use a finer yarn and adjust the hook size.  A 5mm works well for most worsted weight yarn.

Row 1: Ch 5, dc in 4th ch from hook and in the next ch.  Ch 3, turn.

Row 2:  Dc in first dc and in each dc across, work 2 sc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3 turn.

Row 3: Sc in first dc and in each dc across, work 2 sc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

Row 4:  Dc in first sc and in each sc across, work 2 dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

Row 5:  Dc in first dc and in each dc across, work 2 dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 2, turn.

Repeat row’s 3 to 5 for pattern.  Continue until shawl measures 60″ x 80″ or until desired length.

Fringe:

For each fringe cut 2 sections of yarn 12″ long.  Fold two strands in half and insert hook through the end of the row.  Pull looped yarn through, then bring the ends through the loop and pull to tighten.  Repeat for each row.  Alternately if you would like a less thick fringe only add the fringe to the dc rows.

This one was made with worsted weight yarn. I crochet into the back loops only. This gives a ribbing effect.

If you make this please let me know how you like it!  I would love to see your photos!

Welcome to the second edition of Gifts From The Heart.  I can’t wait to see what you’ve been crafting this week!  Please add your links to the bottom of the post.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve had an idea in my mind for a snowman ornament.  Today I sat down and wrote it out.  These would be so cute covering a Christmas tree.  They would also make great gift decorations, or glue magnets on the back for some super cute ornaments!
Chain 4, join with a slip stitch.
1st Row work 10 dc in the center of ring.  Join to the first one with a sl.  Chain 3 turn.
2nd Row *Work 2 dc in first stitch, work 1 dc in next stitch. *  Repeat ** all the way around, join with sl.
Repeat row 2 until desired size is reached.  In my example I stopped after row 2.
Weave ends in.
Hat
Row 1 Chain 16, slip stitch back through all chains.  At the end slip stich backwards 4 stitches. Chain 2
Row 2 *Sc in 8 stitches.  Chain 2 turn.*
Repeat ** until hat is desired height.  Cut yarn, weave in ends and sew to snowman face.
I used google eyes and sequins for the mouth and nose.  However I think mini pompoms would be very cute to!
