When I was a little girl our family often made a braided apple bread. It was one of my favorite treats I looked forward to each winter! Unfortunately I don’t have our family recipe and so I’ve been trying to recreate it. This recipe uses the dinner roll recipe I posted the other day. But you could also use your favorite bread recipe or my basic bread.
While this isn’t quite what I remember from childhood, it’s wonderful! I had to hide the last piece so hubby would be able to try some. lol We’ll be making this often over the winter.
Ingredients
- 5 Apples pealed and sliced
- 1/2 Cup sugar
- 2 Tsp cinnamon
- 1 Cup Warm water
- 3 Tbs Sugar
- 3 Tsp Yeast
- 1 Tsp Salt
- 2 Tbs Butter
- 1 Egg
- 3 to 3 1/4 Cups All Purpose Flour
Filling

Instructions

- Mix with sugar and cinnamon.
- Pour into a baking dish and bake at 350F for 10 to 15 min.
- Combine all dough ingredients in the order specified by your manual. Select the dough setting. Then continue at step 10.
- Combine warm water, sugar and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 10 min.
- Stir in butter, salt and egg.
- Stir in flour.
- Kneed for 10 minutes.
- Cover and let rise until doubled in size.
- Roll our dough into a square and cut 1 inch slices from the sides.
- Pour apple filling in the middle.
- Fold the top of the dough in and fold sliced dough strips over each other to braid.
- Transfer to a baking sheet and bake at 350F for 25 minutes.

Kim that sounds yummy. Tom Pollard gooed when I told him. He is teaching himself how to play fiddle right now. His mom was here for a week and she had bought him a fiddle and brought it out from Guelph, Ontario. So now he is teaching himself by listening to songs on youtube.
Hey that’s great! Glad to hear you all got to visit. Best of luck with the fiddle, I love the sound. What songs is he working on?
I’m definitely going to have to give this a try! Looks so warm and homey!!
That’s great Amanda! I might be making more today to. The kids keep asking for more.
Just made this tonight. The whole family enjoyed it very much. Thank you for the awesome recipe.

Thanks Kate! I hope you love it as much as we do!
I left a comment on youtube…but thought I would here as well. As a matter of fact, my daughters are in the process of making some right now. I am using my recipe for my bread maker as I’m being too lazy to make your bread recipe. I mentioned that on my youtube post that I was going to make your bread recipe for this one…but it’s already 6:00pm and I started a bit late….will be a wonderful breakfast before sending kids off to school.
I will try and post some pictures on my blog…but my blog has very little activity these days. Just seems to be no time…or no interest right now.
I will email later and let you know how it turned out…but from the video, I’m sure it’s going to be awesome…and the kids will ask for more.
And BTW: I using apples from our tree and wow, do they make amazing applesauce…so I think this is going to be a success.
Thank you again for the great videos…they teach me so much…and give me great enjoyment every time I watch.
Blessings,
Connie

Oh, and we are having the worst windstorm of the season (we had one a couple days ago and it tipped our tables outside and sent our barbeque flying across the deck…time to tie it down)…so hoping we don’t lose power while the bread is in the oven…or it will be transfered to the barbeque LOL…now that might make an interesting bread…might be the start of a new recipe hmmm. LOL

Okay…it’s 8:15 and my braided apple bread came out of the oven…and no kidding, dh didn’t wait more than two minutes before slicing into my loaf….and his response was (and I quote)….”this is insane….fabulous”. Of course all my children coming running…and only half the loaf is left. I have hidden it for breakfast tomorrow…wow, was it good.
My only difference was I used my recipe that I always use for making french bread, cinnamon buns, pizza dough etc…only difference is I add an egg. And I added a pinch of nutmeg (which I wouldn’t do again). I LOVE nutmeg…but it really didn’t go that great.
I will try it again, with your recipe…but because it was already getting late into the evening…I have my recipe memorized…and it’s my tried and true “to go to” recipe.
So this is definitely a keeper…oh yes…this is for sure.
You also mentioned on your video about if we had any recipes as a child and we are trying to re-create them…well, I have one. My Oma’s cherry strudel It drives me nuts…cause I can picture it so clearly in my mind. So I am working on one…and hopefully will have it “perfected”…well, may not perfected but as close to it as possible. I asked my Oma (who is 99) and she said she can’t quite remember….but thinks it’s the same recipe we use for the other strudel she made only with sugar in the recipe. (And the other strudel I make is my children’s all time favourite meal….it takes quite a while to make…but SOOOO worth it. Because of the time involved, I haven’t made it very often. Also the size of our family, I have to triple the recipe….or we all fight over who gets the most LOL..and that is a lot of work…especially stretching the dough so thin.)
Anyway, when I get this cherry strudel down, I will definitely post it on my blog….will try anyways.:-)

Oh I’m so glad you all liked it!
The dough recipe I used in the vid is the one posted in this post and it has an egg as well. But my basic bread recipe doesn’t. Well, some times I add eggs if I have extra on hand! lol
Sorry to hear about the wind storm! I hope it calms down soon out there. It’s really windy here to, we’ve been getting East winds for a few days. It sure makes everything feel cold and damp.
Finally got this up on my blog…you can see the photos here… . http://www.treasures-evermore.blogspot.com/
Thanks again for the recipe.
