The weather has been unbelievably nice this past few weeks!  I started working on getting our garden seedlings started.  I also moved my plants from the grow lights in the house out to the green house.  The weather has been so nice, I haven’t had to heat it yet!

  1. Hi Kim:

Great video. Lots of seeds I have never heard of. Did you purchase them because of your type of soil and weather?

I thought we were not going to do gardening this year. So busy with wedding plans and new grandbaby on it’s way…that there would be no time. But Ken has informed me that he really wants to do one…so now trying to figure out what we should grow…hard to pick because of our BC weather.

I was thinking of those (can’t think of the name)…they look like mini green houses. You just put them over the rows…like over top of lettuce or tomatoes. Like hoops. sheesh, can’t remember the name LOLl.

Anyway, did you do a video on that before? Can’t remember. Anyway, I was thinking of something like that to protect the plants from all the rain. And on the days where there is lots of sun, take them off.

What are your thoughts? Any ideas?

Well, off to check out your past videos in case I missed any:-)

    Blessings,
    Connie
PS: Pray everyone is fine and doing well.

    • Hi Connie!

You could use floating row covers. It’s a white cloth that lets most of the sunlight through and the water as well. But it protects from frost and wind.
You could use plastic as well. It wont let the water through, but the plants would still soak it up from the ground. You’d have to vent it a bit though or you’ll have mold problems in the summer.
I don’t think I did a vid with the covers before.

Have you ever looked at West Coast Seeds? They are in B.C. http://www.westcoastseeds.com/
Ordered a lot of seeds from Baker Creak, because they have a great selection of heirlooms of all growing conditions. I was looking for short season ones that had a good bug resistance. I also buy some seeds locally at the farm store.

      • Thanks Kim…I will check into that.

Also, thank you for a wonderful latest video. I ended up watching the Back to Eden video….incredible. Wow, can’t wait for Ken to watch it with me tonight….I’m so excited.

I was wondering something though…and because you and Andy are awesome gardeners and have lots of experience.

We have a plot of our yard that we want to turn into our garden…now it’s just lawn. Do you think we could do what Paul suggests this year. Like lying the newspaper down etc…and able to plant. Instead of skipping the season and having to wait till Fall to get the wood chips down?????????????

Any thoughts would be helpful. I’m so excited that I’m not sure I could wait until next year to plant a garden…but I sure love the way he does things and how he brings God into it…isn’t that what it’s all about?

Anyway, thank you for always emailing back…I appreciate you taking the time.

Give greetings to your dh {smile}.

        Blessings,
        Connie

        • I’m sorry for the late reply! I’ve had a busy week with birthdays, company etc.

You could put the newspaper down, then cover it in an inch or so of compost. Then top the compost with wood chips. The seeds need to make contact with the soil. If they are just sitting in the wood chips that have not been composted well they wont grow well. So I think adding a layer of compost would fix that.

          • I have flower beds that I started by putting 3 layers of newpaper, covering with a good think layer of compost. I planted my flowers in this and then added wood chips over the top. The pants took off really well.

At the last place I lived, I dug up the sod….. they actually have a tool you can rent to do this, but I just used a spade. Then I did the same as the above.

  2. Nice! I went out to do some planting today but the hose wouldn’t work, so I’ll do it tomorrow, the beds were a little dry so I want to give them a good soak.
