Well it sure is a yo-yo of a spring here!  For the most part our weather has been a week of cold weather near 0C, then a few days of low 20C, then back to cold!  Two days ago we were having a pretty good snow shower, then today it was super hot!  This sure is taking a toll on the plants outside.

In the greenhouse the seedlings are doing pretty good.  I have noticed the germination rate is very slow this year, both with seed that I’ve saved and with newly purchased seed.   Some tomatoes sprout in the normal 7 to 10 days, while others in the same flat have taken 3 to 4 weeks.  I was just about to give up on some of them, then I found today they are starting to come up.

In the garden the peas are starting to come up and the rhubarb is just starting to leaf out.  So far no sign of the asparagus, but it is still early here for that.   With our weather going down near 0C again, it’s better that it waits anyway!

How are your seedlings doing?  Has anyone else noticed the germination rate being slow this year?

  1. Yes, I have had similar stuff here. 3/4 of a flat will germinate and the rest won’t. Just when you are about to count them lost, they start to pop up. My rhubarb has already started to bolt. ugh!!!

  2. 42 degrees here today. Brr…. That is actually a bit funny because nearly a month ago we were all thinking mid 40s was warm!

  3. Hi Kim and family. I just cannot figure out this weather…just crazy! but I guess that is because I am NOT God LOL. The sun is shining today but never long enough to dry out the yard. Garden is ready for planting but don’t usually begin till the May 21st long weekend.

I am heading to Ontario in about 10 days and will see after I return if it’s warmed up enough to plant a few things. I’m so excited to start gardening like Paul from Back to Eden….just makes such good sense to me.

Having 6 tonnes of crushed rock brought into the back lower driveway (it is so muddy in that back part of the property) to get ready for our grandson’s birthday…he turns one and my dd and SIL have decided they want it at our place…Yikes!!! Already 40 confirmed to attend and the invitations just went out yesteray…Praying for great weather {smile}.

Nice seeing your videos and catching up with things in your neck of the woods. Wished you lived near Kitchener as I would love to visit. Will be there for my Grandmothers 100 birthday. She shares the same birthday as our grandson. Amazing he turns one and Oma turns 100. Should be exciting times. The party is in St. Catharines but will be spending some of my time in Eganville with family and then heading to St. Catharines and then Kitchener with my sister and other siblings. Will fly out of Hamilton. Wild trip for sure.

Well, that’s about all…love the videos as usual.

    Blessings,
    Connie

    • I hope you have a wonderful trip! Yes I wish I lived closer to where you’re visiting to. I’d love to get together! It’s cold here in Ontario right now, but they are saying next week it will warm up. :)
