There have been many huge bangs the past few days as ice and snow are melting and falling off the roof. Maybe spring is coming? lol We had a really good snowstorm recently that left us with a few feet of new snow. But not nearly as bad as a nearby town, who’s snowbanks hubby says is almost as big as the houses! I hear we might be in for another storm tomorrow night and Wednesday. How bad it will be depends on the temperatures, at least according to the weatherman. We will either be bombed with rain or snow! Either is ok with me, I just hope it’s not more freezing rain. Our last thaw we had a few inches of ice and slush everywhere. When that froze and was covered in snow it was nasty moving around. No surprise that last week we had 2 or 3 snow days for the local schools and closed roads again.
We had a small order of firewood delivered last week to, or I think it was last week. lol Hmm I seem to not be keeping track of my days very well. That happens when every day is gray and stormy and looks the same! We had a cord of hardwood delivered, we use this mostly overnight. That monster pile of slab wood we had delivered back in the summer was getting low. I think this past year was the first time we started burning the woodstoves full time in September. Otherwise we wouldn’t have been getting low this time of year.
But some good news with the warmer temperatures starting, we’ll be tapping our maple tree soon.
I can’t wait for fresh maple syrup! I’m hopping to make snow taffy with the kids this year.

I think we have some sugar maples here too! Maybe you guys can show us how to tap them! I hope to buy some maple syrup from some of the Amish this year too!

Yup, I know hubby could! It’s not hard.
There is a video here that Andy did that shows the maple sapping done…at least I think so…correct me if I’m wrong kim
We used to, it was one of our first videos. But I think dh took it down because it had close ups of the kids in it.
I think we did another one that showed our oops when we over cooked the sap and made maple sugar though. That was a yummy mistake. LOL!
Wow, you guys are sure getting snow…probably as much as we are getting rain LOL. I remember my Grampie doing maple syrup and sapping the trees on my aunts farm in Ontario….my grannie would boil it down outside on an open fire…oh the memories. Sure hope you gets lots of sap as I know it takes a lot of sap to get little syurp in the end….but oh so tasty.
My father has tapped his trees and gotten sap enough to boil down…I have never done it but would like to! I know that you can actually get sap to make into syrup from trees other than sugar maples but I’m not sure it would be worth it!
We’re having a bit of snow flurries today here in central Indiana. Mostly it has been just rainy or freezing rain lately. I would like to have ONE GOOD SNOW to take our newly adopted little guy sledding. While we had some snow, we were sick during the time we could have sledded.
But spring is on it’s way!! Hurray!!
Blessings,
Beth

I too have heard about sapping other trees but without success…other blog folks say the sap is very bitter and not edible. Something to think about for sure.
So excited to see you have adopted…we too are an adoptive family.
Blessings.
Our maple trees are not sugar maples but the sap tastes very good! I’ve read you can tap birch trees to.
Aww hope you get at least on good snow day then!! I bet he would love to go sledding.
